Ex-soldier gets life in prison for Iraqi slayings

PADUCAH, Ky. – An ex-soldier convicted of raping and killing an Iraqi teen and murdering her family has been sentenced to life in prison in a case that drew attention to the emotional and psychological strains on soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Steven Dale Green, 24, of Midland, Texas, was spared the death penalty Thursday after jurors couldn't agree on a punishment for the brutal crime.

In March 2006, after an afternoon of card playing, sex talk and drinking Iraqi whiskey, Pfc. Green and three other soldiers went to the home of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi near Mahmoudiya, about 20 miles south of Baghdad. Green shot and killed the teen's mother, father and sister, then became the third soldier to rape the girl before shooting her in the face. Her body was then set on fire.

you're not supposed to mention a certain word here... get ready for the banhammer.

imho his sentence was too light if you ask me. if ever there was a case where the death penalty is appropriate, this is pretty much it.

What word isn't supposed to be used here?. PM me to let me know if no one wants to say it here. As I have no clue as to what your on about pal :)

As far as I know everything [within reason] is up for debate on here. Including scum that murder some and rape others [the story in the link above].

Too light indeed. They give him a light sentence because they know there is no way people would put up with them letting him off, which they'd probably have prefered to do in the first place.

Not to speak for the mods, but I interpret it to mean a reference to that subject in some sexually-suggestive manner. I mean, it mentions bestiality too....does that mean I can't talk about horses? I don't think so.

If I'm wrong, I guess I just dug my own grave.

Well I guess that falls out of the [within reason] thing I was on about.

So news articles about rape ect are against the rules  it's a fact of life and it might not be a civilised act to commit. But when it is in the news, it should be allowed to be discussed. And in allowing it to be discussed, it should be closely monitored because of such a topic. Not completly banned. If it is completely banned from discussion in regards to news articles that is.

I didn't mention anything. Everything in the post are direct quotes from the article without any commentary from me.

Having said that, I do question why he wasn't further treated after he went on his own seeking help with the homicidal thoughts he claimed he was having....well, I know why...It's because the primary mission was so mismanaged and so taxing on our troop resources that as long as you could stand, aim and discharge your weapon...you're not expendable.

But no excuses, the premeditated atrociousness and barbarism of this act is deserved of the death penalty.

Also, not that insurgents and other enemies need any particular reason to ruthless and brutal with Americans they capture but this incident was directly cited as the reason for the barbaric torture and murder of Pfc. Kristian Menchaca and Pfc. Thomas Tucker some months later.

and yet i was banned for a month for posting a link to an article discussing rape in the US military. i guess it depends on which mod sees this, and what mood he is in then.

This was the update per Petra;

"If you find a news article about racial discrimination, bestiality, incest, sexual assult or rape and you want to make a thread, you MUST include the link to the news article."

That policy has been updated and altered somewhat. Note Petra's recent post:

Based on those guidelines this thread's subject should be acceptable.

Correct!

And they should hang that idiot by his balls and serve him to the Iraqi people. I am sure they know some fine techniques to get even :2 cents:

thanks for the clarification. i was a little confused as i was indeed banned, but my profile doesn't mention the infraction and i'm posting again even though my 'sentence' isn't over yet... so it must have changed while i was gone.

It is a good article. It is easy to judge a situation when you are not in it. A lot of the military in the war zones have mental issues that are not being met well.

"I think there's some hesitancy about executing people knowing how much we know now about post-traumatic stress disorder and the effects of being surrounded by violence," said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center. "I tend to think that people see the experience of war not as an excuse, not as grounds for an acquittal, but perhaps a mitigating factor, that this is someone who in a different environment would not have acted this way."

if that was 'only' murder, then it would be hard to judge, agreed. but rape is another thing. i will judge that.
also, according to a BBC article the 'men' in question spent an entire week planning this gangrape/family murder, it was not something done on impulse.
i guess he would have gotten the death penalty if he were black.

Murder was committed in the most heinous way for the purposes of raping a 14 year old little girl.

I questioned why nothing was done after this guy expressed his homicidal thoughts to a medical professional...That doesn't mean I accept that the planning of the rape and atrocious murder of the little girl and her family is mitigated.

The ugly truth is the only way this guy doesn't get the death penalty is sadly some people believe the lives of these people are of somehow less worth.

This is sick IMO.

Oh, you want to go all the fucking way back to 1961 to make your case ?
''America, when will you stop executing your "black" soldiers" !!!
What is that ? 48 years, give or take, is the most recent execution of an American soldier and yes, he happened to be a black man.
:dunno:

This is not a regular exercise.

The verdict strikes me as appropriate.
